Best Drop Knee Bodyboard

Drop-knee bodyboarding is not just for adults—kids can enjoy it too. However, if they’re going to take part in this sport, they’ll need a board that fits them.

The Morey Mini Boogie is good for petite riders, such as children. Adults can take a swing at using the mini board too. Shorter boards are easier for drop-knee boarders to maneuver through the waves.

Like the Hubboards Dubb Pro Plus Bodyboard, the Morey Mini Boogie board features a crescent-shaped tail and a 60:40 rail ratio for a smooth ride. This will help children learn to control their movements on the board while drop-knee bodyboarding.

The Morey Mini Boogie board’s design includes channels to aid in stability and control, two factors children need when learning to drop-knee bodyboard.

Keep in mind that shorter boards don’t pick up as much speed as longer boards do and won’t float as well with heavier, bigger riders. Details about the right sizing of a Bodyboard for kids can be found here.

The Morey Mini Boogie board is only 21 inches long and has an EPS core. This board’s design does not have stringers, so it will be less sturdy than other boards.

The Morey Mini Boogie board only costs $25, making it perfect for parents and boarders on a budget.

As a larger drop-knee bodyboarder, you need to understand how to control your body weight as you conquer the waves. Because you have longer limbs and more weight to balance, a board with extra control is what you need.

The Big Kahuna, sold by Morey, is perfect for larger individuals because it is 44 inches long. The longer the board is, the more stable it is. Additionally, the longer board has more foam that helps lift larger individuals out of the water as they surf the waves.

The Morey Big Kahuna has an EPS core and an IXL deck. For durability, the Big Kahuna has a single power rod stringer. As mentioned earlier, the Morey Big Kahuna has channels to help balance the bodyboarder’s weight while in the water.

Not only is the Big Kahuna good for larger people, but it’s affordable too! Drop-knee bodyboarders can get the Big Kahuna by Morey in three different color patterns for just $90.

While the 44-inch Big Kahuna is good for those under 6-feet and 4 inches tall, taller and heavier individuals may need an even larger board.

Which are the best Bodyboards for DK Boarding for very large people?

Drop-knee bodyboarders taller than 6-foot, 4 inches tall, and who weigh more than 220 pounds, should look at purchasing either the Mike Stewart Science Thunder XL Bodyboard or the Mike Stewart Science Hybrid XL 3X Bodyboard. Both boards come in either 45 or 46-inch lengths.

The Thunder XL Bodyboard has a Polypropylene core; meanwhile, the Hybrid XL 3X Bodyboard has a kinetic polypro core. These extremely durable boards were originally designed for stoogie boarders. Stoogie boarding is essentially standing up while on a boogie board.

While the boards were designed for another sport, they will work well for larger drop-knee bodyboarders.

Both the Thunder XL Bodyboard and the Hybrid XL 3X Bodyboard have three stringers, dual channels, and a crescent tail. Though these two bodyboards are similar, there is one noticeable difference. The Thunder XL Bodyboard has nose bulbs (small indentations that are scooped out from the corners of the nose to give you a better grip) while the Hybrid XL 3X Bodyboard does not.

The Mike Stewart Science Thunder XL Bodyboard comes in three color options for just under $270. The Mike Stewart Science Hybrid XL 3X Bodyboard comes in only two color options and is more expensive than the Thunder. The Mike Stewart Science Hybrid XL 3X Bodyboard costs just over $335.

A special Board for Advanced Riders

The Catch Surf Odysea Boog Skim Skimboard And Bodyboard has a unique look and design not seen with many bodyboards. Since it is its combination of bodyboard, DK bodyboard and skimboard, it is significantly different to ride and definitely makes sense only for surfers with a lot of experience.

Picture of the Catch Surf Odysea Boog Skim Skimboard and Bodyboard which is a great Board for Skimboarding, Prone Bodyboarding and Drop Knee Bodyboarding but should only be used by advanced or pro level boarders

The Catch Surf Odysea Boog Bodyboard has a very narrow tip which will increase the board’s speed. Additionally, this board has a custom-designed mini crescent tail. The core of this board is made from a dual composite core. With no channels, the drop-knee bodyboarder will be responsible for all their balance.

The Catch Surf Odysea Boog bodyboard has more of a shape like a surfboard. Furthermore it is not flat like other bodyboards, but has a skim-style rocker. This makes it an extremely fast board when it can be ridden properly. The board is built from a double composite polypro core and a double stringer system, which makes it sufficiently robust for all applications.

The Catch Surf Odysea bodyboard is with a length of 45 in (114cm) compared to the typical bodyboards very long. However, due to its special shape this is not directly comparable. So the board is feasible for riders up to 6’3” to 6’4”.

The extraordinary feature is really the shape. Thanks to it you can use it for normal bodyboarding, drop-knee bodyboarding, but also skimboarding. So you can take the board with you to the beach, whether it has surfable waves or not. With regards to skimboarding, we loved its soft surface. This helps massively to reduce scratches and bruises on feet and ankles which happen a lot especially when you start with skimboaring and use a typical skimboard.

The Catch Surf Odysea Boog bodyboard is available in six different color combinations and costs between 250 and 290 Dollar. That’s not cheap, but certainly worth considering for such a versatile product.

Drop-Knee Bodyboard for Kids and Teens with advanced skills

Kids, Teens and really small and light adults should also have a look at the Tribe Scout Bodyboard. You can get this board in different lengths: 36 in (91.4cm), 39 in (99cm), 42 in (106.7cm), and 45 in (114.3cm). Especially the 39in version is very exciting for DK bodyboarders who want maximum control over their moves and are looking for an affordable product.

The Tribe Scout is built from a dual composite EPS core, but it is stiffer than average compared to typical EPS boards.

Otherwise, you will find the typical features such as a Crescent Tail, 60/40 Rail Ratio and a HPDE Slick with Channels, but no stringers on this board. But as said before, the Tribe Scout provides enough stiffness thanks to the well designed core for DK Bodyboarding, even though it has no stringers. The big advantage is, that due to this simpler construction, the prize of the board is accordingly lower.

You get the Tribe Scout in 5 different colors already from about 95$. This price makes it particularly interesting for children and early teens, since they tend to outgrow a board rather fast.

A Drop-Knee Board for Speed Freaks

Great Bodyboard with a bat tail for advanced bodyboarders and drop knee bodyboarders is the Hubboards Dubb Deluxe PE 42

Finally, a special product for all speed freaks. The Dubb Edition PE Deluxe has a so-called Dubb Tail (actually a combination of Crescent and Bat Tail). This tail style extends the gliding surface similarly to the Bat Tail, but is a little more comfortable to paddle.

The board consists of a PE core and a double-stringer sytem with EXT stringers (epoxy fibers). This gives it the stiffness and robustness needed for DK Boarding.

The combination of Dubb Tail and the good stiffness ensure that the board is faster than boards with the usual shape. However, you should be aware that the tail reduces the maneuverability and stability. The Dubb Edition PE Deluxe is therefore the right choice if your focus is primarily on speed.

The Dubb Edition PE Deluxe is available in 42 in (106.7cm) in or 43 in (109cm), which is the ideal size for people between 5’8” (1.75m) to maximum 6’5” (1.95m).

Finally, you can choose between 2 colors and can get the Dubb Edition PE for about 180 – 190$. All in all, however, a fair price for the quality offered.

Can I Use a Boogie Board for Drop-Knee?

Technically, boogie boards and bodyboards are the same product. However, there are some slight differences how the terms “bodyboard” and “Boogie Board” oftentimes are used.

First and foremost, the term “boogie board” is actually a brand of board, not a unique product design. Therefore you can use boogie boards for both regular bodyboarding and drop-knee bodyboarding. In fact, most people refer to bodyboards as boogie boards and use them as synonyms.

The boogie board, originally invented by Tom Morey, now sells under the name the Morey bodyboard. But Morey has trademarked the name “Boogie Board”. Therefore other manufacturers are not allowed to use Boogie Board. This can be confusing, but finally, they all talk about the same product for the same usage.

However, a lot of people make a slight difference: they refer to “boogie boards” as lower-quality and more affordable versions of bodyboards. But from a “technical” standpoint, and also when checking the prizes of Morey, this is not completely correct.

As a conclusion: In principle, any type of board is suitable for drop-knee bodyboarding, as long as buoyancy, stability and stiffness are given. Brand, names and designations should not distract you from finding the right board for you and starting with DK.
